The strength of Crusade lies in its portrayal of how the innocence of children can be manipulated—how they are turned away from the wisdom of their parents and swept up in the thrill of “saving” the Christians from foreign influences. They are enticed by promises of spiritual reward, believing they are doing God’s work. Of course, God would never wish them to be used as sacrifices to the lust and greed of evil manipulators—but the children never realize that it is all a cruel deception. 

Ultimately, the musical is an entertaining and thought-provoking story that shines a light on how easily innocence can be led astray.
